The BBC has announced a major new four-part television series exploring the life of Jesus Christ, with the landmark production set to air on BBC Television and BBC iPlayer in 2027.
Produced by Wonderhood Studios, the series will combine the Gospel accounts with the latest archaeological discoveries, historical research and expert insights to examine the world in which Jesus lived and the beginnings of Christianity.
According to the BBC, the production will use cinematic storytelling alongside contributions from leading historians, Christian scholars, and Jewish and Muslim faith leaders to provide viewers with a deeper understanding of the political, cultural and religious landscape of first-century Judea.
BBC Head of Religion and Ethics for Television, Daisy Scalchi, said the series reflects the broadcaster’s commitment to producing religious programming that helps audiences better understand faith and history.
She described Jesus as “one of the most recognised and influential figures in human history” and said the production will revisit the historical evidence surrounding His life using recent scholarship and new archaeological discoveries.
Tom Garton, Creative Director at Wonderhood Studios, said the series aims to place Jesus within the historical setting that shaped His ministry and the emergence of Christianity.
He added that while Jesus is one of history’s most influential figures, for Christians He is far more than a historical figure-He is the Son of God. Garton said the production will help viewers better understand the people, places and events surrounding His life through ambitious cinematic storytelling.
The announcement has already attracted attention among Christians and documentary enthusiasts, with many looking forward to seeing how one of the world’s largest broadcasters presents the life and enduring impact of Jesus Christ.
The four-part series is expected to premiere on BBC Television and BBC iPlayer in 2027.
