Mel Gibson is set to release the sequel to The Passion of Christ in 2026 titled The Resurrection of the Christ. It has been recently announced that he has teamed up with Lionsgate to release the long awaited sequel.
During a panel with Joe Deckelmeier at Fan Expo Philadelphia, Gibson explained that the script alone took him 8 years to write due to its complexity to understand. He stated that the project was very personal.
“He said, “It will be the biggest film in history. It might be two films. Could be three, but I think it’s two.” – Mel Gibson
The Passion of Christ gained traction for its vivid depiction of Christ’s resurrection. This split movie plan raises more intrigue on what the creative filmmaker has instore for the sequel
“It took me about eight years to write the script for the sequel, if we can call that The Resurrection of Christ, because it’s a very complex and almost impossible to understand subject, so that necessarily you have to underpin it with a great deal of all of salvation history and theology.”- Mel Gibson
It sounds like the next movie won’t be a typical biblical drama about Christ’s resurrection but rather a conversation about salvation and mankind on a philosophical and spiritual level. It may need the runtime to tackle those subjects in depth, which could explain the necessity for two movies.
